The objectives of this study determine the relationship between family abandonment and levels of depression. For the development of the research was executed a quantitative design - correlational and cross cutting, in which 70 adults of both sexes participated, who attend care centers in the city of Loja, of which 17 belong to the "SAN JOSÉ" Centre for the Elderly, 18 belong to the "Daniel Álvarez Sánchez" Care Centre for the Elderly, 17 belong to the Municipal Centre of Older Adults Nº1 Loja and finally 18 belong to the Municipal Centre of Older Adults of Vilcabamba. The type of sampling is not probabilistic by convenience. The tests used were: a survey of perception of family abandonment developed by Bautista (2016) and the Yesavage depression test. The findings reveal that most of the population has a perception of family abandonment, as well as the existence of the three levels of depression, resulting in a p-value of 0,40 indicating a moderate positive correlation between the variables. Upon learning about the presence of this problem, a psychotherapeutic plan was developed for the family and the elderly, aimed at diminishing feelings of abandonment and strengthening the empathic relationship. Key words: elderly; ageing; family abandonment; levels of depression.En la actualidad, el envejecimiento es una etapa de gran importancia para el adulto mayor para mantener una buena calidad de vida, teniendo en cuenta que los individuos al llegar a esta etapa experimentan muchos cambios a nivel social (reducción de su cohorte) y familiar (abandono familiar). La literatura expresa que las experiencias por las que pasa el adulto mayor es el abandono que sufre por parte de la familia, así como el presentar niveles de depresión leve, moderado y severo. Los objetivos del presente estudio determinan la relación entre abandono familiar y los niveles de depresión. Para el desarrollo de la investigación se ejecutó un diseño cuantitativo - correlacional y de corte transversal, en el que participaron 70 adultos de ambos sexos, que asisten a centros de atención de la ciudad de Loja de los cuales 17 pertenecen al Centro del Adulto Mayor “SAN JOSÉ”, 18 pertenecen al Centro de atención para el adulto mayor “Daniel Álvarez Sánchez”, 17 pertenecen del Centro Municipal del Adulto Mayor Nº1 Loja y finalmente 18 pertenecen al Centro Municipal del Adulto Mayor de Vilcabamba. El tipo de muestreo es no probabilístico por conveniencia. Las pruebas utilizadas fueron: encuesta de percepción de abandono familiar desarrollada por Bautista (2016) y el test de depresión de Yesavage. Los hallazgos obtenidos revelan que la mayor parte de la población tiene una percepción de abandono familiar, así como la existencia de los tres niveles de depresión, dando como resultado una correlación positiva moderada entre las variables. Al tener conocimiento sobre la presencia de esta problemática, se elaboró un plan psicoterapéutico dirigido a la familia y al adulto mayor, orientado a disminuir los sentimientos de abandono y fortalecer la relación empática.
