Opis
Streszczenie:Informal employment occupies a large proportion of the forestry sector; for this reason, research on informal employment has begun to emerge in recent years. However, it is still challenging to quantify the contribution that informal employment in the forestry sector makes to the household economy. In Ecuador, the statistical information available on informal employment is presented aggregately, and there are no specific statistics for the forestry sector. The objective of this research was to know the wage level of informal employees and to quantify the economic contribution that this income represents to the household economy. This study was carried out in the province of Zamora Chinchipe, specifically in forestry manufacturing industries in the cantons of Zamora, Yantzaza, and El Pangui. Forty surveys were conducted to collect sociodemographic information, salary aspects, social security, workload, and productive household activities. Wages received by workers in the manufacturing industries were calculated by considering the hourly payment received for the days worked in the year. To determine the economic contribution of informal forestry employment, the total annual income at the household level was quantified (on-farm, off-farm, and income from informal forestry wages). From this total income, the proportion of income from informal forestry work was calculated. In addition, an analysis of variance was performed to compare the wages between formal and informal employment; also, a principal component analysis was conducted to identify the variables that are correlated with the wage from informal employment in the forestry sector. The results indicated significant differences (p= 0.0030; α= 0.05) between formal and informal wages. The average total household income of an informal forestry employee is 11 335.39 USD/year, of which 54.8% depends on forestry income. This study can contribute as a basis for generating policies to improve the working conditions of employees in the forestry sector and to work on strategies for decent work. Likewise, this research could serve as a starting point for future studies to be replicated at the national level, providing more concrete statistics that contribute to a better understanding of the issues concerning forestry employment.
