This research aimed to analyze the efficacy of chlorhexidine recognizing the microorganism (s) with the highest sensitivity to chlorhexidine, compare its efficacy against other antiseptics and identify its most optimal concentration on oral microorganisms, conducting a descriptive and comparative bibliographic review by searching for articles or thesis indexed in databases such as PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar; taking as reference 30 scientific articles. In this review, it was found that the most susceptible microorganisms to CHX (Chlorhexidine) were Streptococcus mutans followed by Porphyromonas gingivalis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus salivarius, due to that these presented greater halos of inhibition than the other microorganisms. CHX was highly effective compared to commercial mouthwashes (essential oils, cetylpyridinium chloride, fluorine and xylitol,); as on mouthwashes based on natural compounds, since with a lower minimum inhibitory concentration CHX achieved a greater zone of inhibition against microorganisms. In addition, it was found that at a concentration of 0,2% was more effective but with a greater possibility of adverse effects. Concluding that chlorhexidine is a very effective antiseptic by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms at the oral level. Key Words: Chlorhexidine, mouthwash, oral antiseptic, bactericide.

Key Words: Chlorhexidine, mouthwash, oral antiseptic, bactericide.La Clorhexidina es un antiséptico bucal considerado “gold standard”, por ser un agente de amplio espectro, bacteriostático, bactericida con una elevada sustantividad de 8 a 12h; utilizado como coadyuvante durante la higiene bucal mecánica. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la eficacia de la clorhexidina al reconocer el o los microorganismos con más alta sensibilidad a la clorhexidina, comparar su eficacia frente a otros antisépticos e identificar su concentración más óptima sobre microorganismos bucales, realizando una revisión bibliográfica, descriptiva y comparativa por medio de la búsqueda de artículos o tesis indexados en bases de datos como PubMed, Scielo y Google Scholar; tomando como referencia 30 artículos científicos. En esta revisión se obtuvo que los microorganismos más susceptibles a la CHX(Clorhexidina) fueron el Streptococcus mutans, seguido de Porphyromonas gingivalis, Lactobacillus acidophilus y Streptococcus salivarius, debido a que presentaban halos de inhibición mayores que los demás microorganismos. La CHX presentó una elevada eficacia frente a enjuagues comerciales (aceites esenciales, cloruro de cetilpiridinio, flúor y xilitol); como ante colutorios a base de compuestos naturales, ya que con una menor concentración mínima inhibitoria logró una mayor zona de inhibición frente a los microorganismos. Además, resultó ser más eficaz a una concentración de 0,2% pero con mayor posibilidad de efectos adversos. Concluyendo que la clorhexidina es un antiséptico muy efectivo al inhibir el crecimiento de microorganismos a nivel bucal.
