| Samenvatting: | The advance of agricultural and urban borders is one of the main variables that cause deforestation, modifying the structure of the dry forest landscape of the Southern Region of Ecuador. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Veda Zone declared in the Southern Region of Ecuador in 1978. The QGIS program and its complement Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin was used to perform the supervised classification of Landsat5 satellite images for the 1985 and Sentinel2 A for 2018. Fragmentation was calculated with the GUIDOS and FRAGSTATS programs. It was determined that the forests of the closed area in 1978 covered 384 876 ha and in 2018, 322 267 ha, giving a loss of -62 610 ha (-13 %), where the categories of Agricultural Land and Anthropic Zone they were the ones that contributed the most to the loss of the forest. Additionally, the annual Deforestation Rate was set at 1 987 ha/year. The fragmentation metrics indicated that in 1985 the core area was 206 794 ha and by 2018 95 772 ha, showing a reduction of the core area of 111 022 ha (-24 %) and a considerable increase in the number of patches of 48 919 units. In conclusion, the Veda Zone has not managed to reduce the logging of dry forests in the Southern Region of Ecuador; therefore, the declaration established in 1978, in part, did not affect due to the great loss of Forest and gain of Agricultural Land and Anthropic Zone.
