Resumo:Agriculture has played an important role in the economy and represents between 5% and 18% of GDP in 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean during 2020, however, it has contributed to a higher level of environmental pollution. In this context, this research analyzes the impact of agriculture on environmental pollution for Latin America, period 1990-2020. The data were taken from the World Bank (2020). Using CO₂ emissions as the dependent variable; the independent variable is agriculture, and the control variables: urban population and foreign direct investment. The methodology used comprises a GLS model with panel data and Westerlund's (2007) cointegration test is employed to identify a long-term relationship. In addition, using the Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) tests, the direction of causality between the analyzed series was verified. The results revealed that agriculture, urban population and foreign direct investment positively influence CO₂ emissions. Likewise, it is confirmed that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship and the existence of bidirectional causality is found, with the exception of foreign direct investment with CO₂ emission, which has unidirectional causality. For the application of public policies, it is suggested that there should be a commitment on the part of Latin American countries regarding the acquisition of more environmentally friendly technologies and machinery, since, it should be taken into account if the functionality of the technology applies in the area.
