Summary:The English language not only encompasses the four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing but also vocabulary, which is considered a fundamental component for language acquisition. Thereby, it is essential to apply teaching strategies that make vocabulary learning effective and enjoyable. For that reason, the present study aimed to determine the improvement of the English vocabulary by using visual aids among eighth-grade students at a public institution in Loja during the 2022-2023 school year. To achieve this aim, two specific objectives were established related to demonstrate the effectiveness of visual aids and find out the students’ perceptions about the use of visual aids in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms. Additionally, this research was conducted using a mixed method with an action research design to collect quantitative and qualitative data through a pretest, posttest, questionnaire, and field notes as research instruments, which were applied to 40 Ecuadorian eighth-graders from a public institution chosen by convenience sampling. Quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics, and qualitative data was interpreted by using thematic analysis. The findings demonstrated an improvement on the level of performance in students’ vocabulary knowledge in aspects such as form, meaning and use. Likewise, the results showed the students positive perceptions towards using different types of visual aids like pictures, realia, graphic organizers and posters to enhance their vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, the conclusions of this study highlight that the implementation of visual aids in EFL classrooms facilitated students’ vocabulary understanding by creating a pleasant and motivating learning environment.
