Yhteenveto:Older adults are population that have a high risk, whit aging comorbidities increase and thereby the need for a greater number of drugs; which results in inappropriate prescription of drugs and polypharmacy practice. So that increases the risk for drugs interactions and adverse reactions. In this study the main aim was to determine the frequency of inappropriate prescription for drugs in older adults according to Beers 2012 criteria established by American Geriatrics Society. This is A descriptive, transversal study in which were included 80 patients over 65 years hospitalized in Clinical and Surgical areas from Isidro Ayora Cueva hospital in Loja city. From them 73.75% were female and the biggest group was those aged between 65 and 74 years. Were excluded older adults who required palliative treatment and had psychiatric disorders. Were included 80 older adults over 65 years, 59 female and 21 male. 48 patients that represent 60% received an inappropriate prescription of drugs according to Beers 2012 criteria. Most frequently drugs were prescribed: ketorolac, benzodiazepines long and short duration, metoclopramide, insulin sliding scale, spironolactone and glyburide. Alluding to second criteria were 9 cases (24.32%) of bad prescription associating History of falls or fractures + benzodiazepines. Also, there were a high rate of polypharmacy represented by 78,75% of patients. Key Words: older adults, Beers criteria, inappropriate prescription, polypharmacy.
