Resumo:The term "family caregiver is used to describe those people who are usually responsible to for helping in the basic activities of daily life of elderly, sick or disabled people who cannot perform these functions on their own. The objective of this study is to establish the determinants associated with the overload of the caregiver of the Adulto Mayor del Barrio Obrapia, the type of study was descriptive and transversal, where a structured interview was applied to 100 people who fulfill the role of caregivers. According to the results obtained; the socio-demographic determinants related to caregiver overloading, the female sex predominates in ages of 36 to 59 years (55%), have ended primary school (76%), the caregiver has more than 4 children ( 64%), care time longer than 37 months (67%), unpaid work activity (76%), within the personal determinants we have that there are relation to the older adult (96%), live with the older adult (97 %), abandoned or decreased some activity for caring (55%), receives economic retribution for care (90%), receives help for care (61%), has received induction or training (97%), presents signs and symptoms of affectation of health condition (51%), do not attend a health service for medical checkups (64%). In conclusion, 55% of the caregivers of the older adult have a "slight overload" level. Key Words: Older adult, informal caregiver, determinants, overloading.
