Description
Summary:Psychomotor development refers to an evolutionary phenomenon of continuous and progressive skills throughout childhood. On the significance of the topic, this study was conducted to analyze exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age and their relationship with psychomotor development in a sample of 100 infants aged 6 to 24 months who came to the Health Center Number 2 in Loja County during the period April to June 2015. For this, a survey was applied to their mothers or representatives from whom information on the duration of breastfeeding was obtained, and psychomotor development of infants using the Denver Test II was evaluated. It was found that of the 100 infants, 56 received exclusive breast milk for the first 6 months, 94.6% of them had a normal development, 5.4% doubtful development and in none was evident a developmental delay. Meanwhile, 44 children who did not benefit from exclusive breastfeeding during the period of the first half, 52.3% showed questionable results in the evaluation of its development, 25% achieved satisfactory psychomotor development and 22.7% showed delay. The results obtained in this study allow us to conclude that exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of age guarantees a better psychomotor development.
