description The use of dogs to take care of goats is a very common practice among goat farmers in the dry forest of the province of Loja. The limited information about the gastrointestinal parasites that affect the health of these dogs has made this study of great importance in the knowledge of the health aspect of these animals. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the presence of gastrointestinal parasites in “Ganacho” dogs in the dry forest of the province of Loja, identify parasitic genera and know the factors that could be associated with their presence, for which 57 samples were collected from canine feces; which were analyzed using the flotation technique with saline solution and differentiated through larval culture. It was determined that 59.7% (34/57) of the animals had gastrointestinal parasites. Likewise, the presence of five genera Strongyloides spp., Ancylostoma spp., Ascaris spp., Isospora spp., and Toxocara spp. were identified, with Strongyloides spp 41.2% (14/34) and Ancylostoma spp 35.3% (12/34) the most found. Using the Chi square statistical test, a statistically significant relationship (p<0.05) was determined between the presence of parasites of the genera Ascaris spp., Isospora spp., Toxocara spp and mixed parasitism with the factor coexistence with other animal species. Adult and female dogs were statistically related to the presence of parasites of the genus Strongyloides spp., while puppies presented a statistical significance with the presence of parasites of the genus Toxocara spp. Therefore, factors such as age, sex, diet and coexistence with other species can be related to the presence of gastrointestinal parasites. It was also determined that there is no specificity of the genera found with the place, with the same ones being found throughout the area of study.

It was also determined that there is no specificity of the genera found with the place, with the same ones being found throughout the area of study.
