Riassunto:The cultivation of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is of great importance worldwide, but information is limited in Ecuador since there are no local studies on shade-grown coffee. Additionally, the productive systems and their deterioration due to the usual form of production of the small farmer are not known. The research aimed at characterizing shade coffee productive systems and describing the existing types of productive systems. It was carried out in the Chaguarpamba canton of the province of Loja, in coffee growing areas, the information was collected directly from producers and traders through surveys in the area. This was categorized by altitude, area and yield in quintals per hectare, and variables were also evaluated with respect to shade management, crop management, pest and disease management, harvest, post-harvest, marketing and socioeconomic characteristics, from which, for the statistical analysis, yield per hectare was related to planting area, variety and shade species; however, any significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between them. It also allowed the identification of two types of shade coffee productive systems: the rustic system, which is associated with native species; and, the traditional - commercial polyculture, in which coffee is planted together with introduced species. Keywords: Coffea arabica L., shade, productive system, coffee growing areas
