Riassunto:Choosing a job can completely determine a person's future livelihood, so making the best decision for each individual requires accurate information about the job he or she is aiming for. In general, the labor market can be separated into two paths: that of the salaried worker and that of the entrepreneur, and the choice between one or the other will depend to a greater extent on the salary that one can aspire to obtain. In this sense, the general objective of this research is to determine the income gap between employees and entrepreneurs in Ecuador during 2021, using statistical and econometric techniques, in order to propose public policies aimed at reducing the income gap. For this purpose, data were extracted from National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) through the Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment Survey (ENEMDU); in addition, the propensity score matching method and the Oaxaca-Blinder gap model were used to determine the precise gap. The main finding reveals that entrepreneurs have an average wage 15.01% higher than salaried workers with equivalent characteristics in terms of age, education and work experience, and this happens because entrepreneurs can obtain a greater economic benefit from a growth in these characteristics. Finally, even though there is a significant income gap between groups, public policies should focus on promoting entrepreneurship, even if this further widens the gap, given that Ecuador is a developing country and needs the ideas of new businesses to drive its economy, and having a higher salary may encourage more people to pursue entrepreneurship.
