Samenvatting:Microbial contamination on hatchery surfaces is a common source of infection for embryos. Therefore, it is essential to keep all areas, machinery, and equipment clean and disinfected to prevent the entry of pathogenic microorganisms. The quality of day-old chicks depends on several factors, such as the age of the breeder, egg weight, and temperature during incubation. This study identified that eggs contaminated with Escherichia coli, from different farms, generate contamination in incubators, which can cause poorly healed navels due to bacterial growth. In addition, practices such as not changing needles during the vaccination process and mixing eggs from mothers of different ages increase bacterial contamination. Without adequate controls, pathogens can proliferate and spread within the incubator. In the poultry industry, the quality of day-old chicks is essential, as it represents the productive potential of the company. Neonatal sepsis due to Escherichia coli was found to affect chicks during the first 24 to 48 hours after hatching, with mortality of up to 5% in the first ten days. Clinical signs include a yolk sac without absorbent and an enlarged spleen. The study analyzed the health profile of day-old chicks from four hatcheries in the province of El Oro, which supplies chicken meat producers.
