Efectos negativos en la salud mental de los jóvenes a causa de la discriminación por orientación sexual e identidad de género

The present curricular integration project is entitled: “Negative effects on the mental health of young people due to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity”, the interest to investigate arises because there is evidence of a remarkable situation of discrimination and disadvantage of LGBT+ people in our society. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity emerges as a significant problem that affects the mental health of young people around the world. This phenomenon, rooted in prejudice and social stereotypes, leads to a variety of adverse effects, including high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, among others. The lack of acceptance by society and family contributes to a hostile and exclusionary environment, where LGBT+ youth face fear of rejection and discrimination in various areas of their lives, from school to work and the community. It is worth mentioning that Article 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador (2008, amended in 2024), states that all persons are equal and shall enjoy the same rights, duties and opportunities, no one may be discriminated against for reasons of sexual orientation and gender identity. Likewise, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in its article 7, establishes that all are equal before the law and are entitled, without distinction, to equal protection of the law. (General Assembly, 1948) This Curriculum Integration Paper examines in depth the mechanisms through which sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination impacts the mental health of young people, considering individual, social and structural factors. It highlights disparities in access to health care and psychosocial support, as well as the need for inclusive policies and programs that promote acceptance and equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Taking into account that article 3 of the Organic Law of Health (2006, modified in 2023), establishes that, it is an inalienable, indivisible, unrenounceable and non-transferable human right, whose protection and guarantee is the primary responsibility of the State; and, the result of a collective process of interaction where State, society, family and individuals converge for the construction of environments, environments and healthy lifestyles. In addition, it explores effective interventions, such as inclusive education, community awareness, and strengthening support networks, that can contribute to the creation of safe and supportive environments for LGBT+ youth. By approaching this problem from an interdisciplinary perspective, this Curriculum Integration Paper seeks not only to understand 5 the negative effects of discrimination on the mental health of youth, but also to propose concrete solutions to promote equality and well-being for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
