| Summary: | The crisis caused by COVID-19 affected the labor market and the world market, resulting in large-scale unemployment. The measures adopted by the WHO, and those of the governments of each country to prevent the spread of the pandemic caused the contraction of production, reducing aggregate demand; As a consequence, portfolio placement was also affected. In this sense, the main objective of the investigation; was to carry out a study of COVID 19 and its incidence on the behavior of the credit portfolio of the medium-sized private banks of Ecuador in the period 2019-2022, for this purpose, quarterly time series of placement of the commercial credit portfolio, consumption and microcredit, from medium-sized banks in the province of Loja, in relation to macroeconomic indicators such as GDP, unemployment and interest rates, applying correlation models. The main results reveal that the portfolio placement amount of the sample was USD 600,217,921.80; consumer credit had the highest placement, however, in 2020, the year most affected by the pandemic, it decreased by 12% compared to 2019; the commercial portfolio experienced a 28% decrease in 2021 compared to 2019; and, the microcredit portfolio maintained a slight growth compared to 2019. It also shows that the need for financing grew slightly; that is, the COVID 19 pandemic affected the behavior of macroeconomic indicators and these in turn affected credit placement, therefore, there is a close correlation between the variables studied. The risks derived from portfolio management must be addressed through technically defined strategic plans. The COVID 19 pandemic affected the credit portfolio, boosting its demand due to a decrease in GDP, an increase in unemployment and interest rates or the cost of money. |
