Resumo:Botanical composition and biomass production are key factors to guarantee good production and productivity levels in cattle farms. The present research was oriented to the study of the botanical composition, dry matter availability and forage balance of the paddocks destined to cattle grazing in the experimental station "El Padmi" of the National University of Loja. We worked in ten paddocks during the months of April to June 2023; in each selected paddock 5 random samples were taken with a wooden quadrant of 1 m2, the plant material was cut to a height of 10 cm, weighed and determined the production of green biomass per square meter, the dry matter was obtained by drying the sample in a forced air oven for 48 h. For the botanical composition was weighed, the dry matter was obtained by drying the sample in a forced air oven for 48 h. For the botanical composition, it was weighed and the dry matter was determined; For botanical composition, 1 kg of plant material was weighed and the different species of grasses, legumes and weeds present were separated and weighed, and then the values were converted to percentages; the forage balance was established by relating the availability of dry matter and the voluntary consumption of the animals. The results showed that the botanical composition of the paddocks is not adequate, with a predominance of grasses such as Merkeron (Pennisetum purpureum) with a percentage of 78.2%, the presence of legumes does not exceed 5% and there is a high frequency of weeds, especially Cortaderia selloana (Cortaderia selloana). Forage availability was appropriate for the number of UBAs maintained on the farm, so the forage balance (BF) was positive. It is concluded that the forage balance is a useful tool to promote good management and utilization of available forage resources.
