סיכום:Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that can affects the fingernails and toenails in people of all ages. However, its has been observed that its prevalence increases with age, affecting up to 90% of older adults. The most common etiological agents are dermatophytes, especially of the genus Trichophyton, followed by yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to identify the Trichophyton species causing onychomycosis in older adults. The study had a quantitative approach, with a cross-sectiondescriptive design conducted during the months of November 2022-February 2023, who met the inclusion criteria. For the identification of the different species of the Trichophyton genus, techniques such as direct observation with 20% KOH, culture of fungi in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar and the microculture technique were used. Of the 92 nail samples processed, fungal growth was found in 83 samples, of which 38 were positive for the genus Trichophyton sp. with 41,3%. Of these, the most frequent species was of these, the most frequent species was Trichophyton mentagrophytes with 81,6% (n=31), followed by Trichophyton rubrum with 15,8% (n=6), and Trichophyton tonsurans with 2,6% (n=1). These findings indicate that the species Trichophyton mentagrophytes is the most common species in toenails that causes onychomycosis in older adults living in the Quinara parish
