description Considering that vocabulary is often deemed as the pillar of the four language skills and an essential component in English Language Teaching and Learning, it is imperative to use and evaluate strategies that can assist in the enhancement of this language component. For that reason, this study aimed to apply mnemonic strategies in teaching vocabulary communicatively, opening the path to determine their effectiveness in vocabulary instruction, and to identify if students develop creative skills while using them. To fulfill these objectives, this action research study was conducted over the course of 6 weeks, using the mixed-method approach. Moreover, the participants were 22 students of elementary basic education, from a public institution in Loja, Ecuador. To gather the necessary data, the researcher used the testing technique, with a pre- and post-test; the survey technique, implementing a questionnaire; and the observation technique, using field notes as the instrument. Consequently, the quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the qualitative data using thematic analysis. The data analysis and interpretation showcased that students had clearly enhanced their vocabulary proficiency, starting with an average score of 4.70 out of 10, and raising to 8.41 and that they did develop creative skills when using mnemonic strategies. These findings were all corroborated by the class observations. Overall, it can be concluded that mnemonic strategies are effective in teaching English vocabulary communicatively and that these strategies foster creative skills, prompting students to develop them. Keywords: Mnemonic strategies, Vocabulary strategies, Communicative context, Vocabulary Learning, Creative skills.  Teniendo en cuenta que el vocabulario suele considerarse el pilar de las cuatro destrezas lingüísticas y un componente esencial en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de la lengua inglesa, es imperativo utilizar y evaluar estrategias que puedan ayudar a mejorar este componente lingüístico. Por ello, este estudio aplicó estrategias mnemotécnicas en la enseñanza del vocabulario de forma comunicativa, abriendo el camino para determinar su eficacia en la enseñanza del vocabulario, e identificar si los estudiantes desarrollan habilidades creativas al utilizarlas. Para cumplir estos objetivos, este estudio de investigación-acción se llevó a cabo a lo largo de 6 semanas, utilizando el enfoque de método mixto. Además, los participantes fueron 22 estudiantes de educación básica elemental, de una institución pública de Loja, Ecuador. Para recopilar los datos necesarios, el investigador utilizó la técnica de prueba, con un pre-test y post-test; la técnica de encuesta, aplicando un cuestionario; y la técnica de observación, utilizando como instrumento las notas de campo. En consecuencia, los datos cuantitativos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva y los cualitativos, mediante análisis temático. El análisis y la interpretación de los datos pusieron de manifiesto que los estudiantes habían mejorado claramente su dominio del vocabulario, empezando con una puntuación media de 4,70 sobre 10 y subiendo hasta 8,41, y que desarrollaban habilidades creativas al utilizar estrategias mnemotécnicas. Estos resultados fueron corroborados por las observaciones realizadas en clase. En general, se puede concluir que las estrategias mnemotécnicas son eficaces para enseñar vocabulario inglés de forma comunicativa y que estas estrategias fomentan las habilidades creativas, incitando a los alumnos a desarrollarlas.
