| Résumé: | Double-purpose livestock farming is fundamental to the economy of rural parishes, such as Yangana, where it occupies 5.73% of the land. However, current productivity is insufficient due to intensive grazing and improper management, which degrade the grasslands essential for livestock farming, turning green pastures into deteriorated lands. This situation calls for improvements in livestock management. The objective of the study was to propose pasture restoration for double-purpose livestock farming on the Caracas farm of the Alvarado Camacho family, in the parish of Yangana, in order to optimize production and promote environmental sustainability in the area. To assess the farm’s condition, soil analyses of the pastures were conducted, along with a silvopastoral inventory, as well as sampling and weighing of the yaragua forage produced in the pastures. Socioeconomic data were collected through an interview with the farm's owners. Besides, the soil analyses indicated that the soils are suitable for producing grass, while the silvopastoral inventory revealed an excess of plants and shrubs in the pastures, which was reflected in low forage production. The interview demonstrated that livestock farming is not profitable on the farm. Based on these results, the proposal suggests amendments to address the deficiencies in nitrogen and phosphorus, maintain the yaragua cultivation, and reseed the same grass, as well as improve irrigation systems, control weeds and grazing, and allow a resting period for the pastures. The construction of a corral with a handling chute is also recommended to ensure proper animal management. |
