| الملخص: | The evaluation of growth curves in animals allows for determining the optimal ages for appropriate zootechnical management. Guinea pigs are representative animals in the rural sector and have a growing demand in the Andean market. The objective of this research was to study the growth dynamics of guinea pigs under conditions without nutrient limitations to evaluate their genetic potential. The study was conducted at the "Punzara" Experimental Farm, at the Animal Nutrition R+D+i Center of the National University of Loja. Guinea pigs of type A1, with short hair and light-colored fur, aged 21 to 147 days, were used. Various variables such as live weight, feed consumption, weight gain, and feed conversion were measured. Four non-linear empirical models were selected to fit the growth curve. Based on the results of R², DES, and AIC, it was determined that the Brody model had a better fit for females, while the logistic model was more suitable for males. The modeled weights allowed for determining that the guinea pigs reached maturity at a percentage exceeding 76% by 119 days. In conclusion, it was found that the appropriate age for mating guinea pigs, both females and males, is four months, and the optimal age for slaughtering guinea pigs for meat is approximately nine weeks. Key words: growth modeling, growth rate, organic maturity. |
