Propuesta de alternativas de mejora para el manejo de los residuos sólidos urbanos generados en la parroquia Jambelí, cantón Santa Rosa

For improving solid waste management in the parish of Jambelí, it is essential to design positive impact strategies on the environment and public health. In this context, we conducted the characterization to identify the generation and composition of the solid waste generated in homes, grocery stores, and educational institutions through an eight-day sampling to determine how their generation and their compounding; in addition, we made a diagnosis of the current situation of the management phases from their generation to their final disposal in administrative, economic, and sociocultural terms, we found that the per capita generation is 0.34 kg/inhab/day, resulting in a total daily generation of 584.12 kg/day, with a composition of organic waste (57.62%), plastics (22.18%) and paper and cardboard (20.98%), the diagnosis identified that the Jambelí parish faces problems such as a lack of environmental culture and education on the part of the population, the absence of waste management practices, a deficient collection service, and, as a consequence, the waste that is not collected accumulates in mangrove areas near the houses; based on the results of the characterization process, diagnosis, and SWOT analysis, improvement alternatives for solid waste management in the Jambelí parish were proposed, these proposals include training and non-formal environmental education, prevention and mitigation, and solid waste management. These actions seek to train and sensitize the population on the proper use and management of solid waste to mitigate pollution in the parish of Jambelí.
