Shrnutí:Overweight and obesity are the result of an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. It is a global health problem that is increasing, and local and national data are worrying. Schoolhood is a vulnerable stage in which several risking factors converge for the presence of excessive underfeeding. The general aim was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and the associated risking features in school children at Unidad Educativa Padre Jorge Quevedo. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study, with a sample population of 219 boys and girls among ages of 5 to 11 years old, whose nutritional status was determined utilizing the body mass index/age; according to the "z-score" data from the WHO 2007. A survey was applied to parents and students to know the incidence of certain risking factors. The results showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity in school children is 32.87% (22.37% and 10.50% respectively), being higher in the male gender 40.63% (23.85% overweight and 16.51% obesity); compared to the female gender 25.45% (20.90% overweight and 4.55% obesity); the age group with the highest prevalence was among 9 to 11 years old. In conclusion, the main risking factors associated with overweight and obesity in schoolchildren are: overweight or obese family heritage, less than 60 minutes daily physical activity, more than 2 hours use of electronic devices for recreational purposes, and more than 5 feeding daily ingestions.
