Summary: | Humanity first became aware of the ecological deficit in the early 1970s, however, by the year 2018 the world's HE was 2.8 per capita, that is, 1.6 planets were needed to meet the needs of humans in that year. In this sense, the general objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of economic growth on the ecological footprint of Ecuador during 1980-2020, through a statistical and econometric analysis, in order to propose strategies that generate environmental sustainability in this country. For this purpose, co-integration techniques with structural breaks and the Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), Dynamic Least Squares (DOLS), and Canonical Cointegration Regression (CCR) estimators are used, and in the short term the Vector Error Correction (VEC) estimator based on data from the World Bank (2020), Global Footprint Network (2020) and Penn World Table (2020). The main results show that the Environmental Kuznets Curve (ECC) hypothesis is fulfilled for Ecuador, and that education has a positive impact on the ecological footprint in the long term, while resource rent has a positive impact in the short term, and the causality test revealed statistically significant feedbacks between all variables. Consequently, it is recommended that the government focus on a more sustainable use of natural resources in parallel to the increase in income, and in response to this, the promotion of renewable energies is a viable alternative. |
