| Yhteenveto: | We define Gingival hyperplasia as an abnormal overgrowth of gingival tissues, which causes aesthetic, functional, masticatory, and psychological disorders in individuals. Clinically, we characterize gingival hyperplasia by edema of the interdental papilla or marginal gingiva of intense red coloration of soft consistency with its surface smooth and shiny; the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of gingival hyperplasia in orthodontic treatment in literature review studies. The following research study is of a descriptive and documentary type with a qualitative approach. For its elaboration, we searched for 40 articles based on the bibliographic review of documents, systematic journals, scientific studies, and review articles on the subject to be treated in the databases Medline/PubMed, academic Google, Scielo, angle orthodontist, progress in orthodontics, Latin American journal of orthodontics where we included a sample of 31 scientific articles. After analyzing all the research papers, we can determine that bacterial plaque is the cause of gingival alterations, especially when patients are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The results showed that of the 100% of the articles analyzed, 53.02% corresponded to the prevalence of gingival hyperplasia, 76.92% to risk factors such as bacterial plaque, 83.33% had inflammation, pseudo-pocket formation, intense red coloration, soft consistency, bleeding, and 50% stated that 3 months after orthodontic treatment gingival hyperplasia was provoked. Therefore, it is concluded that gingival hyperplasia is one of the most prevalent alterations during orthodontic treatment, clinically presenting inflammation, pseudo-pocket formation, intense red coloration, soft consistency, bleeding, clinical signs that appear at three months associated with risk factors such as bacterial plaque. Keywords: bacterial plaque, gingival enlargement, oral hygiene, orthodontic appliances. |
