Summary:This research work was performed in order to determine the incidence of independent study in the academic performance of students in Early Childhood Education and the National University of Chimborazo, semi-attendance learning modality in the period March - August 2011, proceeding in the first instance with the bibliographic review that enabled to have the scientific and pedagogical clarity needed on the relationship between these two variables; then, on the basis of the scientific method and with the support of logical and empirical methods, the use of techniques and instruments of data collection, the hypotheses was found; finally, it is proposed that alternative guidelines positioned from the modern theories of learning and application of methodological strategies that supported by the use of information technology and communication, allow students to develop their potential to get meaningful learning, strengthening skills and abilities that ensure a better performance and exceed independent formation processes.
