Summary:Alzheimer's disease has a significant projection in terms of its increase worldwide. The burden and care required for these patients are exhausting; therefore, this research study on primary caregivers of people suffering from the disease from January to March 2022. The general objective is to learn about the situation of people who provide care for family members with Alzheimer's disease in the city of Loja. The statistical data on the population suffering from this disease were provided by the statistics department of the Zonal 7 Health Coordination. The methodology for this study is the qualitative approach, which uses a non-probabilistic cross-sectional sample called snowball. The sample consists of 15 people called informal primary caregivers, whose ages range from 40 to 70 years old; all of them are from the city of Loja to whom the Zarit caregiver overload test was applied. The results of this study show that 47% of the primary caregivers experienced a high burden due to caring for their family members. This result reflects on the levels of mild and intense overload whose percentage together corresponds to 74% of the caregivers. The remaining percentage (26%) corresponds to the lack of overload. In this sense, it is concluded that the physical, psychological, economic, social, and family well-being of primary caregivers are affected. Therefore, a proposal is suggested for a public policy focused on comprehensive care for primary caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, which allows addressing their needs comprehensively starting from the integration of global opportunities for evidence-based care, inter-institutional collaboration, continuing education, counseling by objectives, and multidisciplinary coordination during the evolution of the case.
