| Summary: | Currently, guinea pig feeding is based on forages but also on concentrate, which allows improving the efficiency of this process. In the present research, different levels of inclusion of maralfalfa (Pennisetum spp.) in guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) diets were evaluated on their productive parameters in the growth and fattening phase. Two hundred 15-day-old Type A1 guinea pigs with an average weight of 378.20 g were randomly placed in 2 observational units per cage between females and males. A completely randomized design with factorial arrangement was applied. Diets were formulated with four levels of inclusion of maralfalfa (0, 2, 16 and 31%) respectively, with the addition of 400 mg/kg vitamin C. The diets were isoenergetic (2800 Kcal/kg) and isoproteic (18%), providing the amount of energy and protein to satisfy the maintenance and growth needs of the guinea pigs. Live weight and feed intake of the animals were recorded weekly for 8 weeks (56 days). The data were processed using the SAS statistical package. The variables measured were live weight, mean daily gain, mean daily consumption and feed conversion. The experimental results showed a statistical difference in live weight (P=0.033) and mean daily gain (P=0.010) after the third week, in mean daily intake (P=0.0016) and feed conversion (P=0.002) with a statistical difference after the second week of investigation. The inclusion of 2% maralfalfa in guinea pig feed can be a strategy to develop an adequate diet and maximize their growth potential. Keywords: guinea pigs, crude fiber, GMD, CMD, CA. |
