الملخص:thesis entitled: STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION AMONG FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF BASIC GENERAL EDUCATION IN THE 'ADOLFO JURADO GONZÁLEZ' SCHOOL OF BASIC EDUCATION, SAGRARIO PARISH, CANTON AND PROVINCE OF LOJA, ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014, had an overall objective of determining the application of appropriate techniques to improve reading comprehension in fifth grade students, which served to select appropriate strategies. The methods used for this research were: cross-sectional design for the implementation of model strategies in workshops; quasi-experimental, because it was made at school with students from fifth grade parallel; comprehensive method to understand the importance of implementing strategies in reading comprehension; analytical, for the analysis of strategies, consistent and relevant to the present difficulties in reading comprehension; Synthetic helped synthesis of the theoretical part; participatory assessment to identify the difficulties in reading comprehension; models or proactive, articulator of appropriate measures to improve reading comprehension strategies; the workshop method to improve reading comprehension and comprehensive evaluation method, it was possible to evaluate the results obtained after application of the workshops;as techniques used: surveys were given to 31 students and one teacher, obtaining the conclusion that most students are found to be level 1 in reading, this is to say that they only understand small, simple texts; additionally most of them do not apply any strategy for learning how to comprehend readings and they disclosed that the greatest difficulty with reading comprehension is non-implementation of strategies, lack of prior knowledge and poverty or lack of vocabulary. It was concluded that the application of strategy models carried out by the investigator using the workshop method, directly benefited the students and teachers, helping to reduce the difficulties presented by the students in the development of reading comprehension and encouraging them to read, proven through Pearson's r. The implementation of strategies enhances reading comprehension and helps improve learning.
