Sažetak:In Ecuador, in the year 2017, there were 150,882 reports, only for crimes of higher incidence, and the homicide rate increased exponentially in these last 32 years until 2022, by 15.86%. This represents a serious insecurity, a country heading towards a world of chaos and violence. In this regard, the present research aimed to assess the relationship between the environmental issues index, solid waste classification, and the security of Ecuadorian neighborhoods in the year 2017, using discrete choice models, with the purpose of proposing policy implications for citizen security from an ecological/environmental perspective. For the study's development, a logit model and PSM with data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics) for the year 2017 were used. It was identified that environmental issues, organic waste classification, and certain characteristics of individuals and establishments are determinants in the neighborhood security perception. It was concluded that the crime prevention theory through environmental design explains the insecurity of Ecuadorian neighborhoods. Therefore, it is necessary for Decentralized Autonomous Governments and the Central Government to invest in the design and management of the physical environment, primarily promoting environmental practices and encouraging the proper separation of solid waste in neighborhoods.
