Summary:This thesis analyzes the relationship between medicine and politics from the discourse and practice of biomedicine. It addresses the problem beginning with a discussion of the mechanisms and ways in which medicine has effected the exercise of political power over the course of history. Subsequently, the study examines the process of constructing the modern biomedical model, then reveals the strategies by which this model influences the construction of references, beliefs and political values in our society. Establishing a balanced distance with those deterministic conceptions that subordinate ideological factors to the workings of the material sphere of economy and production, elevates the role of the scientific discourse as a decisive element in the structuring of power relations. From this perspective, the medical discourse has achieved autonomous epistemic status. This evolution has allowed it to go from being an instrument of power, to being a factor of power
