Samenvatting:The different industrial and urban activities are the greatest source of water pollution, which often contain a high amount of pathogenic microorganisms that cause epidemics and deadly diseases. There are many microbiological tests which use indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and total coliforms), to determine whether or not water is suitable for human uses. La Empresa Pública Metropolitana de Agua Potable y Saneamiento (EPMAPS) has among its responsibilities, the quality control of drinking water that supply to the Metropolitan District of Quito; for this it has some treatment plants in which the Fluorocult test is used, and el Laboratorio de Control de la Calidad del Agua located in the Parque Metropolitano Guangüiltagua, which is used routinely test defined enzyme-substrate "Colilert" for microbiological control of the quality of drinking water. In this investigation was the comparison between the two tests to determine its statistical significance. To this made just the parameters are: detection limit, precision, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. Colilert testing showed to be more sensitive than Fluorocult, but both tests did not show significant differences so it can be used interchangeably in the determination of the microbiological quality of drinking water.
