| Gaia: | This project was conceived for the purpose of designing and building a solar cooker with a parabolic geometry to be implemented in the city of Quito, Ecuador. The way how this device works is as follows: This solar cooker is a heat exchanger that uses the energy that comes from the sun, then the radiant heat provided by the sun is reflected from the surface of the concentrator to a point called focus, which is the geometric place where all the rays reflected from the concentrator converge. Once the rays reach the focus any object placed on this point gains heat and rises its temperature rapidly, thus a pot placed there with food on the inside will be heated due to the heat transfer laws. The first chapter presents information on the importance of this kind of device and its growing relevance during the years. Here is explained the solar cooker types and the parameters to choose a unique kind. In the second chapter, it is explained the dependence of the solar radiation on the geographic location. It is shown the way the weather conditions have a deep implications in the efficiency of the solar cooker. A thermal analysis of the entire system has been made, too. In the third chapter, it is reviewed if an induction system could support the solar cooker under the effect of bad weather conditions or when the hours of daylight are gone. In addition, it is shown a cost analysis. Finally, conclusions and recommendations based on the experiments are available with a pot filled with different ingredients and weather conditions. |
