Gaia:The research was conducted in order to gather the information needed for the construction of a written report on the Quito photograph of the late nineteenth century, as an instrument of social marginalization and discrimination against indigenous people. Research was conducted in the social context of the time, and historical events. It deepened in semiotics for visual analysis of photographs at different levels of interpretation. The research was qualitative in nature, by analysis synthesis method. Interviews were conducted with a photographer, a historian and journalist, more analysis of the photographs. In conclusion it was found that the social dynamics of late nineteenth century clearly showed the superiority of the aristocratic classes imposed on the indigenous class, so the pictures reflect the treatment and the role that the Indian had on society, however, its presence in the images was always avoided.
