It is a province that has a low level, has 385,000 inhabitants, of whom 39.9% are of African descent (154,000). The data for human development (UNDP 2004) indicate high levels of unmet basic needs and high poverty rates (65.9% of the population lives on less than $ 2 a day and 39.2% on less than $ 1). Today the north of the province of Esmeraldas, particularly the Canton of San Lorenzo, is the scene of major changes and conflicts. The logging, shrimp, oil palm plantations, teak and eucalyptus, are altering the ecosystem of the tropical rainforest and mangroves. |
