description This academic article shows folk dance as an art and a special kind of performing rites, expressing beliefs, tales and desires that are transmitted by a dancer, who once on the stage takes on his communicator role because of the need of revealing himself through the movement that he develops with his body by expressing gestures. This paper also depicts an Ecuadorian folk dance that has been widely studied at its origin, customs and tradition in the indigenous Otavaleño people. This research has been carried out through an analysis based upon the “nonverbal communication” theory, following the contributions of Ray Birdwhistell, Edward T. Hall, and Flora Davis, all of which is supported by several factors associated with behavior in the kinetic area.. In addition, two theoretical approaches have been applied: symbolic interactionism and ethnographic method; both are closely related to communication and culture theory contributing to highlight the importance of meanings and the phenomena cultural way of life. The contribution of this research, according to the above mentioned communication theories, is focused on studying the meaning that human movements imply, unlike several other studies that only look at the Semiotics subject. Therefore, the present work concentrates on the detailed gestures description and body expressions performed by dancers in the choreographic play called TIANGUEZ MINDALAES from the Kichwa-Otavaleño people. The group that performs it belongs to the Salesian Polytechnic University (Quito Campus) and it represents the work and production activity carried out by specialized retailer merchants
