Riassunto: | Horticultural production in Ecuador is an important activity in the food supply for the population and the national economy. Despite the importance of this economic activity, both for the revival of the rural economy, as agribusiness and exports, the reality is that vegetable production in the country depends almost entirely on imported seeds. The present study addresses this issue in the framework of food sovereignty. The research focuses on the production of two types of representative crops: broccoli, whose production is mainly for export and tomatoes. The study reveals that the main supplier of vegetable seeds in our country is the United States. Vegetable seed imports from that country account for over 90% of the total. This dependence on seed imports is detrimental to food sovereignty. |
