सारांश:The objective of this project is to make visible the communicative dimensions of the dancers' clothing in Cotocollao, highlighting the importance of the clothing artifact beyond its practical function in everyday life. Likewise, it was intended to explore the cultural symbolism of each of the garments and accessories that the dancers wore at the time of performing their dances. The clothing of the dancers in the Yumbada of Cotocollao possessed a cultural richness that could be analyzed through the clothing artifact. As a methodology, a qualitative approach was adopted, primary data was collected through interviews with key informants, such as the leader of the Cotocollao area and people who characterize themselves as Yumbos. Secondary data were also obtained through literature review and historical documents. The results were obtained through semi-structured and triangulated interviews, as well as observation sheets that documented the functions of the vestimentary artifact. As a result of the analysis of the communicative function and the interviews, it was possible to identify that the garments and accessories worn by these characters have a symbolic value related to nature and, especially, to the mountains. Each of these characters represents the spirit of a mountain. Among them, the Yumba represented the female mountain, the Yumbo Auca represented the male mountains, the Yumbo Mate chased away bad energies, Mamaco was the heart of the Yumbada, he guided the Yumbos and set the rhythm, while Mono Martin was in charge of protecting and feeding the Yumbos. The clothing of these characters is not only an expression of cultural identity, but also a tool for the preservation of historical memory and the transmission of values to future generations.
