| Summary: | This project aims to design and build a prototype capable of generating electricity using wave energy, which is the energy derived from the movement of ocean waves. The initiative arises in response to the growing energy demand in Ecuador and the problems caused by a heavy dependence on hydropower sources, which have led to several energy crises in recent years. In the initial phase, a theoretical review was conducted to understand wave behavior and analyze the different available technologies for harnessing wave energy. Two alternatives were then evaluated: an oscillating water column system and an oscillating mechanical arm system with direct transmission. After a comparative analysis based on cost, safety, installation, and feasibility criteria, the mechanical arm system was selected due to its simplicity, ease of implementation, and better adaptability to the testing environment. A prototype was designed and built, adapted to a hydraulic channel. It consisted of a wave generator, a buoy connected to an oscillating arm, a unidirectional ratchet-based energy transmission mechanism, a flywheel, and an electric generator. The system converts the vertical motion of the waves into continuous rotation to generate electricity. During experimental tests, various wave conditions were simulated. The results showed a maximum output of 1.9 volts and an efficiency of 41%, demonstrating good performance considering the prototype’s low cost. It was concluded that it is feasible to develop functional wave energy technologies using locally available resources in Ecuador. This work contributes to the advancement of renewable energy and opens opportunities for sustainable marine technologies in the country |
