Description
Summary:Pyelonephritis is a serious infection of pregnancy and is a consequence of undetected bacteriuria, affecting the state of health of the pregnant woman manifesting with hyperthermia, headache, nausea that reaches vomiting, dysuria, among others. When pyelonephritis is confirmed by laboratory tests, the most frequently isolated etiological agent is Escherichia coli. Immediate treatment with parenteral antibiotics, intravenous fluids and antipyretics is essential, with the hope of preventing potentially serious maternal and fetal sequelae that can lead to death. After an effective treatment, vigilance and careful suppression from the first level of care is required, ensuring to instruct and raise awareness among pregnant women, through a good interrelation with their doctor in educational activities about maternal responsibility, the integration of the family into the process, and its correct nutritional and hygienic habits during the rest of the pregnancy and in new pregnancies to avoid recurrent infections.
