Description
Summary:Grasslands are an important source of livestock feed and excellent wildlife habitat, providing environmental protection, carbon and water storage, and conservation of plant genetic resources. Forage grasses have a high amount of carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins, technology has favored the emergence of improved species. In Ecuador there are endemic forage species and many improved species have been introduced for the grazing system. Weeds have a negative impact on livestock grazing systems, since their development is much faster than normal grasses, causing them to compete for water, light, soil and nutrients. Among the most used control methods to limit or eradicate the impact of weeds in the poteros we have the cultural control that aims to reduce or control the rate of weeds through different methods such as planting, preventing grass seeds from being contaminated with weed seeds. In mechanical control, different tools such as hoe, scythe and different agricultural machinery are used for the propagation of weeds.
