| Summary: | Ocular pathologies are the most common in canines and require the most attention in daily clinical practice, this is because the eyes of this species are quite delicate organs. Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca is a pathology that most commonly affects the canine species. It is a disease that affects the production of tears. The causes may be due to autoimmune adenitis of the lacrimal gland. It presents differently in each globe. ocular, whether bilateral or unilateral. The objective of this experimental work was to determine the incidence of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca in canine patients from Ciudadela el Mamey, Babahoyo, in patients who attend the Hospivet Veterinary Hospital, and thus determine their tear production and how it affects quality of life. of the patient and their owners. To diagnose this pathology, it can be diagnosed through a complete ophthalmological examination, but there is also the Schirmer Test that gives us quantitative values, and thus be able to have a more accurate and definitive diagnosis. The results obtained were that 4% represent positive cases since the tear measurement is equal to or below 5 mm/min, while 19% of the animals were detected as suspicious for QCS with results between 10 - 14 mm/min, and in the negative category they represented 77% to QCS with values of 15 – 25 mm/min. The sex of the animals is not an important factor in predicting the incidence of KCS in canines. This means that canines of both sexes are equally likely to develop KCS. |
