La EPOC es una enfermedad que se origina como una respuesta inflamatoria a la exposición constante de agentes tóxicos inhalatorios, entre ellos los resultantes del consumo de tabaco. Actualmente existen 300 millones de pacientes diagnosticados con EPOC a nivel mundial, siendo los países de bajos recursos los que presentan un mayor índice de estos casos, Latinoamérica tiene un 13,4% de incidencia de esta patología, convirtiéndose en el estadio más frecuente la EPOC leve o moderada.
