description Potato (Solanum tuberosum L) is a crop of great importance worldwide, being one of the five most prominent. Native to some regions of Ecuador, the potato is essential for food security and the economy of the Ecuadorian highlands, where it is mostly consumed fresh. However, the presence of bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, represents a serious threat to its production. This highly resistant and adaptable disease affects not only potatoes, but several crops around the world. The possibility of latent infection aggravates the situation, compromising the production, export and income of agricultural communities. The study not only seeks to quantify the impact of the disease, but also propose solutions and resilient agricultural practices. The objectives include characterizing the damage caused by R. solanacearum in potato crops in Ecuador, describing the typical symptoms of infection and detailing control methods. Ralstonia solanacearum. This highly variable bacteria seriously affects the production of potatoes and other crops. Control methods are highlighted, including cultural, genetic, organic and chemical approaches. Genetic transformation shows promise with the introduction of genes like AtEFR (Plant receptor of Arabidopsis thaliana involved in early pathogen detection), and oregano and thyme essential oils offer effective biological alternatives. The need to investigate more about the biology of the bacteria and promote sustainable agricultural practices is concluded.
