| Resumo: | Ecuador maintains a tropical climate with favorable conditions for the production of various fruits such as watermelons. According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Ecuador, it has approximately 4,230 hectares of watermelon plantations, the average annual production is 50,642 tons. The purpose of this work is to understand the use of silicon in reducing water stress in the watermelon plant (Citrullus lanatus L.). Silicon is the most common element on Earth that is not considered an essential element but is useful for the development and growth of plants, as well as overcoming the effects on biotic and abiotic environmental products. The properties of silicon help plant to withstand adverse conditions. In the case of plants, the stressor is the environment when conditions of drought or low water availability arise, called water stress. Several studies have confirmed the potential of silicon, because when it is absorbed by plants it is found as monosilic acid. Therefore, farmers do not know much about the potential of the elements that plants need, and in this case silicon is not considered as a nutrient for plants, so we have carried out this work so that they know about silicon as a new element in watermelon cultivation |
