| Samenvatting: | This research examines the effect that the consumption of calcium-rich foods has on the effectiveness of iron supplementation in preschoolers diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. The main problem identified is how calcium consumption impacts iron absorption, which is important for recovery from anemia. The objective of the study is to determine this dependency among children attending the Sauces III Health Center in Guayaquil during the years 2024-2025. Parents were surveyed about their eating habits and use of supplements, blood samples were taken to measure hemoglobin and ferritin levels, and medical files were reviewed to verify diagnoses. The analysis was carried out using statistical methods in Excel to organize and evaluate the data. The results led to the conclusion that the simultaneous consumption of foods rich in calcium, mainly dairy products, negatively affects iron absorption. It can be inferred that children with anemia should be kept away from calcium-rich foods if the aim is to maximize the effectiveness of iron supplementation. Adherence to iron treatment was high, but the closest follow-ups marked them as little progress due to the lack of systematicity in the administration schedules. It is stated that the interaction between calcium and iron is relevant and needs to be included in the dietary recommendations for the management of iron deficiency anemia, emphasizing the nutritional education system of the parent and caregiver. |
