| Riassunto: | Chagas disease is a prevalent and fatal parasitic infection that affects millions of people, mainly in 21 endemic countries in Latin America. The causative agent is the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, where its vector is a hematophagous insect of the subfamily Triatominae (vinchucas, bedbugs or chinchorros). The objective of this study is to analyze canine Chagas disease and its impact on public health, as well as its clinical manifestations and main risk factors that have made an impact in endemic rural areas of Ecuador. The dog is a frequent source of blood for Triatominae, influencing as a reservoir in the chain of transmission of Chagas disease. The symptomatology of Chagas disease in dogs is presented in 2 conditions which are chronic and acute, very similar to humans. Since there is no effective vaccine to prevent the disease, control is based on reducing transmission by vectors. In the etiological preventive procedure, antiparasitic drugs could be used, such as: benzinidazole, belonging to the nitroimidazole group, and nifurtimox, belonging to the nitrofuran group. |
