Summary:Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is one of the most demanding conditions in the hospital emergency area, since this is a pathology that affects the entire respiratory system, making it impossible for it to properly fulfill its vital function of providing oxygen to the blood and eliminating carbon dioxide. The objective of this case study is based on refining the ventilatory therapeutic strategies to be used in an 89-year-old male patient diagnosed with acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19. The treatment applied in the patient is the non-invasive ventilatory support of oxygen through the low-flow oxygen therapy system, which begins with a reservoir mask, in which antibiotics are also added, but seeing that there is no improvement of the patient, high-flow oxygen therapy is established through a high-flow nasal cannula, even presenting failure of the use of the latter, invasive mechanical ventilatory support is applied to improve their oxygenation levels.
