Las principales causas de un estrabismo pueden ser la lesión del nervio óptico o inclusive un mal funcionamiento de los músculos que controlan el ojo. Resulta muy importante su determinación y el debido procedimiento. Cuanto más tardío es su comienzo y más rápido el tratamiento, mejor será el pronóstico sensorial, y viceversa. El estrabismo, si no se diagnostica y trata de manera oportuna puede llevar a ambliopía.
