Sammanfattning:This research focuses on identifying and analyzing the factors contributing to the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding in Ecuador. Using a mixed-method approach that includes surveys and interviews, several key factors influencing this practice were identified, such as socioeconomic, labor, cultural, and knowledge-related conditions. Findings indicate that mothers with lower incomes and those working in the informal sector face greater difficulties in maintaining exclusive breastfeeding due to the lack of paid maternity leave and the early return to work. Additionally, the lack of adequate knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding and proper breastfeeding techniques, along with cultural influences and the lack of family and community support, significantly contribute to the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding. The consequences of abandoning exclusive breastfeeding are severe, including a higher risk of infections and diseases in babies, as well as increased health risks for mothers, such as breast and ovarian cancer. The study recommends implementing supportive labor policies, strengthening educational programs, fostering community and family support, and improving access to health services to support mothers in the practice of exclusive breastfeeding.
