Summary:Introduction: Pterygium is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva that invades the cornea, mainly affecting people exposed to environmental factors such as solar radiation, dust, wind and chemicals. Objective: Determine the relationship between agricultural activities and the prevalence of pterygium in the inhabitants of the La Corona Campus, in the Babahoyo canton, during the period from November 2023 to April 2024. Methodology: a mixed cross-sectional qualitative-quantitative research was applied. A questionnaire and optometric checkups were applied among the inhabitants of the La Corona Campus. Through simple random sampling, a sample of 104 people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was determined. Results: 70.2% of respondents do not use eye protection during agricultural activities. Only 20.2% have had visual checkups with health professionals. 89.4% are unaware of the risks of prolonged sun exposure. 64.4% present symptoms of Pterygium. There is a lack of knowledge about the importance of eye protection. The lack of preventive information is worrying. Conclusions: It is crucial to educate about eye protection and promote prevention practices. In addition, work must be done to facilitate access to regular check-ups to detect pterygium early.
